IX INTERNATIONAL FOLKLORE FESTIVAL "NORTHERN RAINBOW"

The main idea of the festival is to involve the Yakutian folklore performers into the international cultural interaction, regardless of remote place of residence and huge distance from the world's leading cultural centers. The festival is held to promote and preserve traditional folklore of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) as well as to promote the cultural expansion of regions at the national and international level. We wish to improve the level of performances, and as such, invite famous foreign artists and experts to participate in the work of the jury, perform at concerts and hold workshops.
The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is the largest part of the Russian Federation. It occupies 3,083,523 square kilometers, one-fifth of the territory of Russia. Yakutia is not only the biggest but also the coldest land in the world. The climate of Yakutia is extremely harsh with big temperature variations from −60 °C in winter to +40 °C in summer. Over 40% of its territory is beyond the Arctic Circle. It's the country of contrasts. In winter the temperature drops to - 40 - 50 degrees by Celsius. The Pole of Cold is situated in the Oimyakon region, where the lowest temperature 71.2°C was fixed. The summer is short, dry and has relatively high temperatures, which can hit +40 C.
Yakutsk is a capital of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). It is 6000 km from Moscow. It was founded in 1632 by Russian Cossacks on the bank of the Lena river. This date is considered to mark the incorporation of Yakutia into the Russian state.
The Festival presents the guests a unique opportunity to have a look at the culture of different nations and see by their own eyes how northern people survive in permafrost area.
The International Folklore Festival “Northern rainbow” hosts non-professional folklore vocal and dance ensembles as well as individuals willing to perform to the local people as an honored festival guest. During the festival each group will have several performances according to the program of the festival. Groups should perform approximately 10-15 min (Opening ceremony) and 5-10 min during festival days either with live music or CD.
The festival has a competitive character for local performers, however foreign guests might also join the competition under the festival regulations.
HOW TO GET TO YAKUTSK?
The easiest way to get to Yakutskis to take flights Moscow-Yakutsk (6,5 hours) or Seoul-Yakutsk (4 hours). Tickets start at 400 euro return. The festival will organize the transport for the groups coming to Yakutsk international airport and pick them up from the airport. We will also provide transport for travel to festival venues.
The average temperature in February in Yakutia -30-35°C, however, it’s rather comfortable sunny weather.
